General Operation
It is important to follow the instructions below, as well as other available User Information, in order to maintain optimum performance and longevity of the simulator components.
WARNINGS
The simulator must not be operated inside an MRI.
Never cardiovert/defibrillate Emma/Emily directly. Always use a suitable adapter (e.g., Laerdal´s ShockLink®).
CAUTIONS
Do not administer fluids through the simulator's openings (mouth, nose, umbilical cord), or through peripheral accesses. This can cause severe damage to the simulator‘s electronics. Do not use humidification systems for ventilation or incubator humidification. If fluids are accidentally administered to the simulator, turn off the simulator immediately, do not turn it back on, and contact Laerdal support immediately.
Do not administer any type of fluid into the extremities.
Put a few drops of the silicone oil provided in both nostrils and in Emma/Emily‘s mouth before each training session. Intubate Emma/Emily several times before each training session using a tube moistened with the care oil supplied.
Before each training session, apply a few drops of silicone oil into the simulator's mouth. Use your pinky finger to gently spread the oil throughout the upper airway, ensuring all surfaces are evenly coated and no dry areas remain.
For intubation, use an endotracheal tube with a maximum size of #3.5 tube (ID 3.5mm) and a maximum outer diameter of 5.2 mm.
For intubation, use a size 0 or 1 Miller blade.
Only use the silicone oil supplied with this simulator.
Use only umbilical venous catheters with a maximum outer diameter of 4 Fr (French).
The simulator is splash-proof but not waterproof. Do not submerge the simulator in water.
Do not puncture the simulator with sharp instruments or needles when placing chest drains, performing needle decompression, or inserting a subclavian catheter or PICC line.
Cutting the umbilical cord and placing peripheral accesses on the limbs (not in the area of the head and neck) is possible. However, fluids must not be administered through these accesses either.
Do not install any additional programs on the Instructor PC or tablet as this can impair the performance of the entire system.
If the simulator is not used for an extended period, charge the battery at least once every 90 days to prevent damage.
Store the simulator in a cool and dry place. Avoid operating temperatures higher than 30° Celsius, as the additional heat development can damage the electronics of the simulator. During training, make sure to turn off heaters, incubators, etc.
Ventilate the simulator with room air (21%) only and under any circumstances do not use humidification.
Do not use disinfectants. These can cause damage (discoloration, cracking) to the silicone skin.
Follow the instructions regarding appropriate configuration, troubleshooting technical issues, and using the patient simulator.
Make sure that this information is shared with all training participants (and, if applicable, the team of trainers) during every training session. Failure to follow these safety instructions may cause serious damage to the simulator and void the warranty.
