Arm Maintenance

Replacing the Arm

Remove the arm

Before starting, follow the Open the torso skin procedure.

  1. Lift the chest plate to expose the arm bolt.

  2. a. Unscrew the arm bolt. Do not unscrew fully.

    b. Lift up the arm bolt.

    Note

Depending on the model, locking and unlocking the arm is done differently.

  3. Disconnect the cables as shown and feed them out of the arm socket.

  4. Disconnect all cables and remove the arm.

    Note

Depending on the model, locking and unlocking the arm is done differently.

Articulated Arm

Note

To tell if your arm is an Articulated Arm or Drug Recognition arm, flex the arm at the elbow. If it flexes, that is an Articulated Arm, if it doesn't that is a Drug Recognition Arm.

Cleaning the arm IM pads & absorbent sheets

The arm IM pad can be punctured numerous times before being replaced or dried. It can withstand up to 5 x 2 ml injections before needing replaced with a dry pad.

  1. Unzip the arm skin from shoulder to wrist.

  2. Remove the arm IM pad.

  3. Wring out the fluid from the pad.

  4. Completely air dry (approximately 12 hours).

  5. Lift out the IO arm bone.

  6. Remove absorbent sheet, if wet.

  7. Discard the used sheet.

  8. Select the new sheet.

  9. Insert the sheet into place.

  10. Replace the arm IO bone.

  11. Ensure the base of the IO bone slots into place.

  12. Place the IM pad back inside the shoulder.

For more information on this procedure, check this how-to video.

Replacing the IV port & seal

Change the IV port or seal if they show signs of significant wear and tear.

SM_Arm_IV_Port_Seal_Plug_01.svg
  1. Unzip the arm skin from shoulder to wrist.

  2. Release the IV port from the chassis.

  3. Rotate to release from the tube.

  4. Remove the IV port completely from the arm.

  5. Remove the used seal from the inside IV port.

  6. Discard the used seal.

  7. Insert a new seal into the IV port.

  8. Align and attach the IV port to the tube.

  9. Rotate the IV port to secure in place.

  10. Click back into the chassis.

  11. Zip up the arm skin.

Maintaining and replacing the arm IO bone
SM_Arm_IO_Bone_Replace.svg
  1. Remove the arm IM pad.

  2. Lift and slide out the used arm IO bone.

  3. Puncture holes in the used IO bone can be repaired with Loctite 454 or similar superglue OR replace the IO bone completely when it has been significantly punctured.

  4. Replace repaired or new arm IO bone.

  5. Ensure that base of IO bone slots into place.

  6. Place the arm IM pad back.

CAUTION

If using fluids, ensure that the bone has been repaired properly, or use a new bone, to avoid causing internal leakage and damage.

Removing the arm skin

Some arm maintenance tasks can only be carried out by opening the arm skin.

Unzip the arm skin from shoulder to wrist.

SM_Arm_Skin_Remove.svg
  1. Position the arm to expose underside and detach the skin at each plug.

  2. Detach the skin at inner elbow point.

  3. Remove the skin from the shoulder area.

  4. Remove the skin from the hand.

Drug Recognition Arm

Note

To tell if your arm is an Articulated Arm or Drug Recognition arm, flex the arm at the elbow. If it flexes, that is an Articulated Arm, if it doesn't that is a Drug Recognition Arm.

Replacing IV Arm Catheter/Filter

Replace the IV catheter module if it is damaged or if resistance is unrealistically high when injecting fluids.

  1. Unzip and fold down the IV arm skin to expose the IV catheter module.

  2. Using the no. 4 Phillips screwdriver; remove the 4 screws and pull the IV module out of the arm.

    SM_IV_Catheter_Replace_1.svg
  3. Lift the IV catheter up and out, exposing the recess where the filter is located.

  4. Lift out the IV filter and replace with a new filter.

IV Arm cleaning
Daily cleaning

When the day’s sessions are done, flush the IV Arm with air to remove any fluid/liquid in the system. Connect a syringe filled with air to the IV catheter, and flush the IV Arm with air until only air exits the overflow tube.

Before storage or shipping

Flush the IV Arm system with Isopropanol 60%-70%, and then flush with air.

Regular cleaning of IV Arm

Regular cleaning of the IV arm system is recommended as part of proper care of the product. Once or twice a month, the IV Arm system should be cleaned thoroughly

NOTE

Do not use force if the IV fluid system seems blocked; it is likely that the simulator is not turned on.

  1. Ensure that the simulator’s power is ON, and that the IV Arm is properly connected.

  2. Connect a syringe filled with Isopropanol 60%-70% to the IV catheter, and flush the IV Arm System with it.

  3. Connect a syringe filled with air to the IV catheter, and flush the IV Arm until only air exits the overflow tube.

NOTE

Never store the simulator with isopropanol or liquid in the IV Arm System.
